FAQs

  • Our services are designed to support individuals with chronic health concerns, those who feel frequently ill, fatigued, or in chronic pain, and anyone seeking to optimize their overall well-being. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by prescription medications, are looking for a more natural approach, or wondering which supplements may benefit you, we may be able to help.

Standard lab testing often misses critical information such as food sensitivities, hidden infections, environmental toxins, mold exposure, nutritional deficiencies, and metabolic imbalances.

Dr. Macie specializes in helping individuals manage and improve complex health concerns like fatigue, mood imbalances, digestive issues, and other chronic wellness challenges. We also focus on promoting overall health and prevention in areas like heart health, cognitive function, and hormonal balance. Contact us to discuss how we can support you in achieving your health goals.

  • Integrative/Functional Wellness focuses on identifying the underlying causes of your symptoms and working with the body’s natural systems to restore balance and promote healing. For example, someone experiencing thyroid imbalances due to an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto’s disease may have an immune system that is unintentionally attacking the thyroid.

Our approach would focus on understanding and supporting the immune system, creating a balanced environment in the body to help prevent further imbalance and support the thyroid's health.

This differs from traditional approaches. For example, a specialist may focus on addressing the thyroid with hormone replacement, but may not address the underlying immune system imbalance. Our approach looks at the body as a whole, prioritizing the interconnectedness of systems for long-term health and wellness.

  • We do not prescribe any medication. We are happy to work along side your primary care doctor to support your health. The two approaches work really well together. Conventional medicine is great at diagnosing and labeling a disease, but functional wellness aims to identify the underlying imbalances in the body.

  • We do not provide primary care services. We focus on preventive health, nutrition, and functional wellness to help you address the underlying causes of chronic health concerns. If needed, we collaborate with your primary care doctor and specialists to ensure comprehensive support for your health journey.

  • A common myth is that functional wellness is expensive and out of reach. However, by focusing on prevention and addressing the root causes of health issues, functional wellness can actually help reduce long-term healthcare costs. This approach minimizes the need for ongoing medication management and costly treatments like surgery. In many cases, being proactive now can save money in the future by preventing more serious, expensive health problems down the line. Early assessments and interventions allow individuals to address issues before they escalate, ultimately avoiding more extensive and costly treatments.

  • A common misconception about natural medicine is that it’s not based on scientific evidence. Functional medicine incorporates research from various fields including nutrition, endocrinology, and genetics. There is a large and growing volume of scientific evidence to support a functional medicine approach.

  • Many people believe that functional or natural health is all about supplements. While supplements can be a helpful tool to support the body and provide what it needs to function better, we take a more comprehensive approach. We emphasize not only supplements but also the importance of proper nutrition, lifestyle changes, and stress management.

Relying solely on supplements may not address the root cause of health concerns. Some practitioners use what's called 'green pharmacy'—offering multiple herbs and vitamins—but that alone doesn’t get to the heart of the issue. It’s important to watch out for practitioners who claim to practice functional wellness simply by substituting pharmaceuticals with supplements without addressing the underlying causes.

Functional wellness is also not just about diet. While nutrition is a crucial aspect of health, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Lifestyle factors such as stress management, sleep, and activity levels all play essential roles in achieving long-term wellness.

With supplements, you’re not always getting at the root cause. Some practitioners employ what’s called green pharmacy. Some patients have gone to other practitioners who are trying the natural approach, but all that’s been done for the patient is giving them 10 supplements like herbs and vitamins. It’s something to look out for because a lot of practitioners will say they’re doing functional medicine because they’re using supplements instead of pharmaceuticals, but they’re still just putting a band-aid on the problem.

Functional medicine also is not just about diet. Obviously diet is a critical component of someone’s health, but there are so many other pieces that can be involved such as lifestyle and stress.

  • In conventional healthcare, chronic conditions are often viewed as progressive, degenerative, and lifelong. Once you receive a diagnosis, you may be prescribed medication or treatments that you need to manage for the rest of your life. In contrast, functional wellness takes a proactive approach. We focus on addressing the underlying causes of health issues, so while supplements may be used temporarily to support the body, the goal is to help you make lasting, healthy lifestyle changes.

Most of our clients work with us for about six months to a year, and after that, they typically return only for routine, preventive check-ins. Our focus is on creating long-term wellness so that you can thrive without relying on lifelong treatments.
